The Sunset Strip Music Festival

Marilyn Manson, The Offspring and Bad Religion were amongst the acts headlining the SSMF Festival, held on the notorious Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. With Viper Rooms and The Roxy situated around the corner, the choice of location couldn’t be more rock if Keith Richards snorted a line from the pavement.

Having already seen all three groups live, I thought it would be the perfect occasion to take photos from the crowd, so with a Kodak disposable that I’d bought for 10 $ I got straight to the front of the crowd.

Under a roasting mid-evening sun, Bad Religion started proceedings with 21st Century Digital Boy  which got the nostalgic skin-heads out and the mosh-pits in full swing.

Imbetween shows, we hit the beer tent. I had to pull out my drivers licence to prove my age. Cheers.

After our mid-time refreshment, we headed back to relive our youth, when I bump into a familiar famous face, fresh from the cover of the gossip mag’s for beating his chick. Shifty Shellshock from Crazy Town. Blake pretended he couldn’t hear me when I asked him to take a photo. Shifty was buzzing.

The Offspring had already started (but the photo was well worth it) and the best pit of the evening ensued.

WTF! Star studded evening, the bloke from the ‘Pretty Fly For a White Guy’ video was getting looooose! Cue the Prison Break bad boys to sort this shit out :

It was CARNAGE. Really. The Valley Girls were out in force to sing along to ‘Get a Job’ or whatever…

Time to hit the strip to check out the Marilyn Manson fans, eagerly awaiting their idol :

You can sleep easy now. Danny Filth is still alive and kicking.

The crowd had changed from a sea of sweaty white skin to a profusion of black leather and the male punks had been replaced by female Dita Von Tease wannabees. Marilyn piped up with Disposable Teens, then started speaking about some sexual assault accusation he’d had, which was my cue to go find a burger.

JIMMY’Z

I met the founder of Jimmy’Z , Jimmy Ganzer in Anglet during the International Surf Film Festival in July and his business partner, Blake.

They invited me to come hang out in L.A to show me their local haunts and the iconic skating and surfing spots of Santa Monica, Malibu and Venice Beach and to meet the people who have their names etched in skateboard history.

Jimmy told me to come over to check out his house, hidden in the Malibu hills and showed me various artefacts, photos and paintings that inspired the collections from brands heyday, in the 1980′s when the Jimmy ‘Z team was made up of the eras most poignant skaters:  Christian Hosoi, Steve Cabellero and Steve Olson.

The recent brand relaunch has created a lot of excitement in the industry, as it’s always been at the root of the skate scene, with Jimmy still lending his creative hand to the newest collections. From shorts, skirts, tees and hoodies, Jimmy’Z holds on to it’s old-school roots, whilst fully embracing modern style affirming his come-back with a team consisting of Steve Caballero and the young-gun, Daniel Cuervo. The new range is available to buy on their site, with some pretty sick reproductions of some old designs, however, they’d better get some of those leopard print tee’s (like the one worn by Hosoi in the photo above) done sometime soon!

VVMC Motorcycle Ride

Whilst I was over in Los Angeles for work, a French friend of mine residing in California invited me along to the VVMC’s ‘Third Sunday’ vintage motorcycle ride that would be going down in Venice.

Equipped with my camera, I took about 700 photos of the various motorcycles and their respective owners.

I didn’t expect to participate and was subsequently inappropriately dressed for jumping on the back of a Honda 650, but I couldn’t resist and ended up taking part and going along the Pacific Highway to Neptune’s Net where hundreds of bike lovers had gathered.

From Harley lovers to Honda fans, hundreds of passionate bikers had made the trip to the legendary seafood restaurant to display their rides and to have a few beers next to the Pacific Coast Highway.

It was here I met Greg Ramirez, member of the Imortales Bike Club, who arrived on Harley’s with their signature Mexican blankets posed in between the handle-bars.

Interview for FAST AND FOOD with Anne-Flore Marxer

During my week-end stay at Anne-Flore’s place in Annecy, she took me to what she considers to be the ‘best ice-cream artisan in France,’ Glacière Perrière.

I asked her a few questions, took a few photos and got the FAT interview published on the culinary blog, FAST AND FOOD ! It’s in French btw…

INTERVIEW

VICE Guide to The Olympics

The people from VICE have produced a series of mini documentaries on the detrimental effect of the Olympic Games in London. From the locals of East London who’ve been evicted from their homes to allow for the construction of the Olympic site, to age old fans of the Games, who’ve been unable to obtain tickets, The VICE Guide to the Olympics provides an interesting insight into the profound effect the world-class event has had on the habitants of the capital city.

PINK HAIR

The best time to live in Paris is during the summer because the Parisians have all quit the capital for their annual holidays. By ‘all’ I mean, literally, ALL. Like a mass evacuation, every 14th of July, the locals jump in their cars and hit the southern-bound motorways, and inevitably a traffic jam that leads all the way to Bordeaux /Lyon.

Let's get the fuck outta Paris

This mass exodus means that local commerces, the tabac, boulangerie and hairdressers are closed for one month, so for those who decided to stay, usually only people doing work experience who are forced to stand in for their colleagues, have restricted amenities. Which brings me onto my dilema. As a result of the recent heatwave and inner-city pollution, I have, what appears to be permanently greasy hair, which is not helped by the fact I have 2 inches of roots. In desperation I decided to resolve the problem, reaching for an old bottle of pink hair dye that I’d half used on the end of my friends gorgeous blond hair. I’m not 15 any more, I don’t listen to Avril Lavigne and I’m not a Hello Kitty fan, but my current overdose of 90′s female rock, Veruca Salt, L7 and Hole as seen on my previous post, got me reaching for my old nighties, leopard print fur coat and my white sunnies.

L7

My attempt was pretty disastrous, doing the whole head and as a result leaving several patches of blond/brown in the back. At least it looks good from the front. For now.

HIT SO HARD

Patty Schemel, the notorious drummer of the band Hole during the 1990′s picked up a camera and filmed their infamous Live through this World Tour. With never-seen before backstage footage of Courtney Love, Melissa Auf der Maur and a certain Mr Kurt Cobain, Hit So Hard documents the harrowing and disastrous side of the eras dominant Grunge movement.

WAKESURFING IS NOT EASY

Wakesurfing looks easy. It’s not. Apparently, the technique is all in the hips and shifting your balance between your front and back foot. By putting weight on your front foot you’ll accelerate and on the back foot you’ll slow down.

Me

Sounds easy, but I still ate shit.

Still not good enough to let go of the rope

I’m sure it’s a question of practice, but at 35€ a session, I don’t think I’ll be getting good anytime soon.

Here are some photos of people that are good :
