International Surf Film Festival

Last year, I spend 6 weeks in Anglet, covering the events in and around the Nike Round House. This year I’ve returned to participate as a member of the jury for the International Surf Film Festival.

The jury was equally diverse, from the professional longboarder Margaux Arramon- Tucoo to French actor and skateboard enthusiast, Vincent Desagnat passing by Jimmy Ganzer, the founder of the Californian brand Jimmy’Z.

Over the course of 4 days, we watched and then discussed an assortment of 20 films, short and long from countries such as Hungary, Brazil the UK inside the festival building, then every evening, an outside projection would take place, under the stars.

The films that made the biggest impression on the jury were, Come Hell or High Water a film on body surfing and Grouchos Del Mar filmed and produced by 2 brothers embarking on a road trip of South America which collectively scooped the prize for the best film, best surfer and best cinematography.

My Gypsy Birthday

After my 50′s themed party in England, I thought my birthday festivities had come to an end for the year. Until Thursday evening, when J-Bay informed me we had to go film for the show in Paris. The whole week had been spent moving into our new office, so the last minute organisation for the shoot was rushed, Jeremy saying we had to run by the new office quickly to pick up the camera.Fifteen minutes later, we arrived at the hanger to pick up the material, only to be greeted with a huge “surprise!”

The hanger had been totally converted with the addition of a caravan decorated in fairy lights, the boot of the FAT mercedes was heaving with beer and rosé and of course, all of my friends from past and present were there. All the ingredients for what was a brilliant night.

Cheers J-Bay and Ben xx

America in Paris

Being English, there are very few culinary delights that I miss. When ever I’ve visited shops that import British ‘specialities’, the products on sale resemble more of a 1941 ration- book :  Crawfords Cream CrackersBeef OXO,  Marmite or Digestives - I mean who EVER eats Digestives unless it’s to make a cheese-cake? Which brings me to cheese-cakes, only the Americans could take a bland English biscuit and transform it in to something desireable with the help of American soft cheese. The Extreme Makeover of desserts, or the only time a French person would utter the words ‘good, American and cheese’ in a sentence, although not necessarily in that order.

FAT Tony

Which brings me to the party I went to last night, to celebrate the one year anniversary of the web site Yumise, that proposes all your favourite American ‘gourmandises’ delivered to your door. The buffet table was array with Reese’s Pieces, Lucky Charms, M&M‘s and Dr. Pepper, Mrs Field’s cookies, brownies, carrot cakes - an inevitable dieter’s nightmare. Not forgetting the FAT Tony the Tiger ! (Which my grandfather designed, btw..)

And then the time came for the birthday cake, a pina colada flavour cheese-cake.

“Honoring the Man” Sailor Jerry Party In Paris

Despite being organised on a peniche, docked on the Seine, the Sailor Jerry Party did not attract the Parisian bohemian types that usually frequent such venues.

In fact, it was the occasion for the weird and wonderful to come out and in all their splendor, to celebrate the anniversary of the death of the man who popularised and stylised the sub-culture that is tattooing, Mr Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins.

True to the nautical theme, girls dressed as Sailors and Mermaids served cocktails, we ate Americain-style barbeque food and we danced along to 50′s rock. The rock and roll group Hot Chickens performed an outstanding live set, complete with double-bass throwing and a lot of lively dancing then the Godfather of rock, DJ Coppola stepped up to play some classics.

The only problem with a Sailor Jerry party, is the hang-over the next day.
